I was recently asked to shoot Hartpury College Graduation Photography for this years students from Hartpury College in Gloucester Cathedral.
The first thing that became apparent was the lack of light, naturally in the told Cathedral building the light level was very low, coupled with the fact that no flash was to be used it made shooting very tricky. Under normal circumstances one might opt for 1600 ASA at the top end of the film speed rating but I was forced to use a speed rating of 6400 ASA ! and even then this only gave a working range of about 1/60 > 1/100 of a second and an aperture setting of f2.8 > f4.0
Throughout the day I was tasked with obtaining a selection of images that showed the students getting ready, receiving awards, the speeches and natural reportage photography images for social media and marketing use.
Quite often the most natural photography in the educational environment is obtained by allowing the event to unfold in front of you and grabbing shots as opportunities arise, this is how I worked through the day to produce a set of great images from the ceremony.

Location photography and being an educational photographer is not all about shooting pictures in classrooms, lectures and inside the educational environment but I also have to be versatile enough to be able to capture iconic images of educational architecture. This shot is of a new innovation centre recently opened by The Royal Agricultural University. As well as the student photography you can see on the RAU website I have often been tasked to create images of the various locations they use. how to get interesting image son what quite often can be mundane buildings requires a creative photographer. For this image I decided to shoot at dusk this allowed the sky to become dramatic and the lights form the building were able to illuminate everything else, the addition of a car passing by during the long exposure gave the extra edge as the light trails blurred with the vehicles movement.

As a specialist in educational reporartge style photography it’s always great to be able to have a bit of freedom when creating imagery for University prospectus and marketing collateral. Being able to move around a campus at will with and without models we can create wonderful natural images that really help the client to stand out from the crowd. This is a set of images created around one such campus using students as models with a roving brief to shoot student life, you can view the gallery using this link.
